Galeries Lafayette arrive in Nîmes: an opening set to transform the city center
This is news that will reshape the commercial landscape of Nîmes: Galeries Lafayette will open its doors in October 2025 within the La Coupole shopping center.
This return of an iconic department store to the city center is part of a dynamic of modernization and revitalization of the heart of the city, led by SOCRI LIMITED, owner of the shopping center since 2021.
Since this acquisition, major works have been carried out to reposition La Coupole as a true hub of commercial attraction. A first phase of renovation in 2023 helped modernize and green the central space, offering a brighter and more welcoming environment. Now, a second phase with a budget of 9 million euros is dedicated to transforming the site to welcome Galeries Lafayette.
The ongoing construction includes:
• A new facade on Rue Général Perrier, more open and modern.
• The installation of monumental escalators 20 meters long and 7.5 meters high, visible from outside.
• A complete restructuring of the commercial level, with 3,700 m² of space including 2,500 m² dedicated to retail.
But the arrival of Galeries Lafayette is not limited to the shopping center. The City of Nîmes is also conducting an ambitious urban renovation program, including:
• The pedestrianization of Rue Guizot for better circulation between Les Halles and Boulevard Gambetta.
• Beautification of Rue Général Perrier between June and September 2025, with high-end surfaces.
• Redevelopment of Rue des Halles, Rue de la Maison Carrée and Rue des Flottes, to improve traffic flow and make the space more pleasant.
Another major transformation: Zara, located nearby, will reopen in August 2025 after a complete renovation, with a redesigned store of 1,600 m² incorporating the brand’s latest concept.
The economic impact will be significant. The opening of Galeries Lafayette is expected to generate 50 direct jobs, prioritizing local recruitment. Two job forums are planned for June and September 2025 to build the store’s teams. The arrival of this flagship brand will also strengthen the attractiveness of the city center, with an estimated footfall of over one million visitors per year.
Finally, one of the great expectations concerns the brand selection offered. Discussions are underway with major national and international brands, and an official announcement will be made in April 2025 to reveal the first signatures.
With these major transformations, the city center of Nîmes is preparing to experience a true commercial renaissance, combining tradition and modernity to offer residents a premium and renewed shopping experience.
